The Southwest Virginia Gay History Project offers three LGBTQ history walking tours in Roanoke, Virginia. In 2016 we launched our first tour, the Downtown Roanoke LGBTQ History Walking Tour. In 2017 we launched our second tour, the Old Southwest Gayborhood Walking Tour. In 2020, we began offering our newest tour, the Salem Avenue Historic District Walking Tour.

Our Roanoke LGBTQ History Walking Tours are free monthly walking tours exploring Roanoke’s queer past.

Did you know that Downtown Roanoke once featured as many as six gay bars? On our Downtown Tour, you will learn about the role of downtown businesses, public spaces, and street life in shaping Roanoke’s LGBTQ history. Tour stops may include Roanoke’s late nineteenth-century red soft district; places associated with the history of lgbtq+ rights activism; and sites of conflict between local government, police, and the LGBTQ community.

    Hey Roanoke! June is Pride Month, a time to commemorate the LGBTQIA+ community! This year, PLAY Roanoke is teaming up with local non-profit, the RDC to carry you the Queer Adventure Club (QAC)! Together, we’ve planned a variety of adventure-based activities starting this month, and offered throughout the summer.

    QAC: New River Footpath Ride & Dine

    This 57 mile lengthy Rails to Trails venture stretches from Galax to Pulaski. We will be biking a 15 mile section from Foster Falls to the Hiawassee River Bridge. This trail is rated mild to moderate. After our ride we will head to the iconic Draper Mercantile. A small historic village along the New River with unique shops and an astounding restaurant with delicious food.

    QAC: Wild Caving

    We are going wild caving! Virginia is home to more 4,000 caves and caverns. Unrestrained caving means no lights but the ones you bring, no marked paths, no hand rails, but loads of adventure. Our guides will take you under the earth to one of the many wild caves in our area. Our caves recline comfortably all year circular at about 55°F. So you can beat the Summer
