Shortly after I moved to Downtown Cleveland in late , I saw a poster for an upcoming concert for a group called the North Coast Men’s Chorus. Judging by the photo and the overall design aesthetic of the poster, it looked kinda gay, like the New York City Homosexual Men’s Chorus. Some swift research on my iPhone revealed that the North Coast Men’s Chorus is, indeed, a gay men’s chorus, though I didn’t encounter the actual words “gay" or “LGBT" until I navigated to their website's “About” section.

History of Gay Bars
With this being National LGBTQ History Month, I also believe it is important to celebrate the present. Our city, Cleveland, has had a few victories this year that definitely require celebrating. While we still have a fight ahead of us, acknowledging where we have made advances gives us strength to fight on. Share with me in this and know that each of you are a part of this.
Say what you want, but gay bars have been the cornerstones of LGBTQ culture for a very long age. They have been sanctuary, front lines of rebellion, keystones to neighborhoods, and starts of our out lives. As we maneuver forward through our history, we are seeing a decline in those establishments.

Welcome to the Gayborhood: A ,sq-ft LGBT hub is taking shape on the edge of Lakewood
Chicago’s got Boystown. San Francisco has The Castro. Los Angeles has West Hollywood. And soon Cleveland will have a “gayborhood” to call its own.
With a multi-phased opening through , Studio West will cover nearly , square feet of actual estate on the border of Lakewood and Cleveland—offering the local LGBT people a central gathering place to live, work, shop, and play.
Founded on the pillars of intersectionality and inclusivity, the project is crafted to create a thriving LGBT ecosystem in Cleveland.
“A lot of other cities have a neighborhood for their LGBT community,” says co-developer Daniel Budish. “Because Cleveland doesn’t really own anything like that right now, we’re trying to use this project to catalyze the creation of such an area through a single project.”
