Love is Love - an LGBTQ Poem
Poem - Treasure is: For James and Stuart on your Engagement x
I wrote this poem, Love is Love, a few years ago now, and it has been sat in my notes, waiting for today - the day when James (my wonderfully supportive and caring big Brother in Law) finally became engaged to Stuart (the male who secretly filled my biscuit tin with chocolate biscuits and my freezer with ice cream at the end of his visit - if that doesn't tell you what a lovely person he is, I don't understand what will). There aren't many things in experience which can fill your heart with joy and settle your soul favor the moment you realise that someone you look after about has found someone who really cares about them and like all moments of high feeling, words tumbled through my mind in rhyme develop, waiting to be written So here it isLove is Love - A poem
True love isn't affection if it fits in a mould
It doesn't show up in shapes or sizes
True love just arrives and takes hold
It wraps its arms around you and doesn't let go
It changes your journey - and that's how you perceive
One day you could be stumbling down a dark, beaten track - then suddenly it grabs you, and it pulls you right back.

But Now
You used to transmit me flowers, but now, it would appear,
That you no longer bother with such affectations – dear.
You used to buy me chocolates, offering wrapped in golden foil,
But now I don’t receive chocolates, or anything – at all.
You used to bring me nice champagne, the bucket packed with ice,
But now, it’s half a'bitter – and you shudder at the price.
You used to comprehend my fragrance, you established perfume,
But now you wouldn’t notice it if I sprayed the entire room.
You used to remember my birthday – you used to remember my name,
You used to think a date with me more special than a game.
And if we had to be apart, you’d call me every daytime,
But now you never bother – as there’s nothing left to say.
But wait…
I used to accomplish my hair for you; I used to wear nice clothes,
I’d teeter on stiletto heels – do you remember those?
I used to obey when you talked; I used to call you “honey”,
I loved to cook you three course meals – and all your jokes were humorous.
I used to publication surprise nights out, I used to iron your shirts,
I valued your opinion – I could never see you hurt.
I used to rub your aching ba
Two poems that aren’t usually thought of as Valentine’s Day poems contain lines that would suit longtime lovers, including engaged and married couples.
Robert Browning’s classic “Rabbi Ben Ezra” begins:
Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
“Rabbi Ben Ezra” isn’t a love poem but a meditation in verse on the life of the 12th-century scholar in its title. But countless lovers have inscribed its renowned first two lines, both written in iambic trimeter, onto the flyleaves of books or Valentine’s Afternoon notes and cards. And all three would operate for straight or homosexual couples. The full message of the poem appears online at
Another classic with lines that would suit gay or direct couples is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s translation from the German of Simon Dach’s “Annie of Tharaw.” It includes the rhyming couplets:
Oppression, and sickness, and sorrow, and pain,
Shall be to our true adore as links to the chain.
As the palm-tree standeth so straight and so tall,
The more the hail beats, and the more the rains plummet,
So love in our hearts shall grow mighty and strong, Looking for ways to surprise that particular someone this February 14?
