Fact Check: Did Zelensky Attend a 1999 Celebration Parade in New York?
A photo has been deceptively edited.
A photographcirculating online purports to present Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his former adviser Oleksiy Arestovych at a New York pride celebration. The image has been digitally altered. Neither guy appears in the authentic image.
The image shows two men heavily made up and in skimpy outfits below a caption that reads “New York 1999.” Arrows point to two men identified as Zelensky and Arestovych, but their faces were digitally superimposed onto the photo. The original image, which was taken at a Fresh York gay pride pride on June 25, 2006, shows neither of the men is the Ukrainian president or his onetime adviser. Otherphotos from the same collection show the same men in diverse poses and locations.

Ph “The war in Ukraine, it’s not just a war between Russia and Ukraine. It’s a war between totalitarianism and democracy. It’s a war between homophobia and LGBT rights. It’s a war between death and life.” Borys, a twenty-seven-year-old Ukrainian soldier, delivered this stark assessment to Openly News. Homophobia has remained common in the post-Soviet space. It is a commonplace to speak that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a fight between authoritarianism and the rights of free people to govern themselves. Less well known is the marked divergence in equality for LGBTQ+ persons between countries that once held allegedly similar views. In Ukraine, the fact that many LGBTQ+ persons have taken up arms and joined the military and supported the war in other ways is contributing to rapidly changing attitudes. This stands in marked contrast to the state of affairs in Russia, where the Kremlin focuses precisely on further isolating and attacking LGBTQ+ people in Russia and in the occupied regions of Ukraine. This serves Russia’s geopolitical interests and, more narrowly, the intere Right wing pundit Candance Owens has described Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “homosexual actor” and said it’s the reason she can’t support Ukraine’s defend against Russia. Earlier this year the Australian government knocked back a via request from the US firebrand speaker who had been planning to brain off on a speaking tour around the territory. Home Affair Minister Tony Burke said Owens’ application to go in Australia has been knocked back because she had the “capacity to incite discord”. “Australia’s national interest is best served when Candace Owens is somewhere else.” Burke said. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began in 2014 when it annexed parts of the country, and in 2022 Russian President Vladamir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of the country. Ukraine’s efforts to maintain their independence has been supported by the USA, Australia and other countries. On Tuesday December 3rd Owen shared her thoughts on the clash on her social media platforms. “No amount of media brainwash in the world c .Ukraine Distances Itself from Russia in Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality
