Singer Sam Smith revealed more about their sexuality in a candid interview over the weekend.

The “Stay with Me” singer, who came out as gay in 2014, revealed that they are open to online dating people of all genders and gender identities.

Smith, in an emotionally open interview with British paper TheSun, explained, “I’ve never really kind of played by the rule novel. I love people and whoever I fall for, that’s who I plummet for. I don’t understand who that’s going to be.”

The Grammy Award winner went onto explain that it’s “a freeing thing – to not be limited to one category of person.”

While Smith doesn’t comprehend if they will collapse in love next with a man, woman or someone who identifies as nonbinary, they affirmed, “I generally have never really thought about people, any human beings, in rigid terms.”

“I just fall in love with whoever I fall in love with,” the “Dancing with a Stranger” artist furthered. “I’ve always felt the way I’ve felt.”

Out, Proud & Authentic

In recent years, Hollywood has done some phenomenal work to explore the sensitive topic of homosexuality. From shows like ‘Sex Education, ‘Tales Of Cities’ to movies like ‘Call Me By Your Name’, ‘The Half Of It’ to songs like ‘I Will Survive’, ‘I’m Coming Out all bring forth the queer narrative that until very recently wasn’t depicted in popular culture.

In the past years, many celebrities have struggled with considerable homophobia when they first came out publicly. From Billy porter to , Several Hollywood celebrities not only paved the way for the current crop of celebs to live more free lives but also showed the general public that they too can come out without apprehension or fear.

The fight against gender and orientation stereotypes is far from over, even in a progressive space enjoy Hollywood. But, there is now a ne

The song opens with clips of Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow and queenly queen RuPaul calling for self love, imposed over a decadent scene of Sam Smith flying into a manor party via gold helicopter. Smith emerges clad in pink ruffles – a picture of queer joy.

Among the video’s many costume changes, Smith is shown in high-heeled boots, nipple pasties, corsets and – most wonderfully – a showgirl headdress and skintight black dress. The lyrics declare, “I’m not here to make friends, I need a lover”, a motto Smith developed after being “friendzoned” on dates.

The video rejects heterosexual, traditional gender roles in favour of queer representation. It features gender-defying outfits and writhing men in exposing underwear, reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s Alejandro or the hypersexualised images of same-sex attracted art icon, Tom of Finland.

Smith’s video also includes “voguing”, the dance design of the gay ballroom scene (made mainstream by Madonna’s music video for Vogue), many sequins and – at one show – references to erot
