The Simpsons has a variety of characters, each with a unique backstory, and one that viewers have always been curious about is Waylon Smithers Jr, Mr. Burns’ assistant. Over the course of the series, there have been many clues about Mr. Smithers’ sexuality, but when did they all begin? Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons began as a series of animated shorts in The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987, and it was developed into a half-hour prime day show three seasons later. The series made its official debut in 1989 and has been attractive much unstoppable ever since, with over 30 seasons and counting.
The Simpsons follows the ups and downs in the lives of the title family and other colorful characters from Springfield. The Simpsons contain earned a couple of enemies and allies as well, and one that can play as both is Mr. Smithers. The always loyal Smithers works at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant next to his boss and self-proclaimed best friend Mr. Burns, and though he does his best to provide as a voice of reason, he ends up doing whatever his boss wants.

'Simpsons' Character Smithers Comes Out as Gay
— -- After 27 years on the animated series "The Simpsons," character Waylon Smithers Jr. came out of the closet on Sunday night's episode.
Smithers, voiced by Harry Shearer, is the longtime personal assistant and bestie of Mr. Burns, also voiced by Shearer, the maniacal head of Springfield's nuclear power plant, where Homer Simpson works.
Smithers decided to come out of the closet in an episode titled "The Burns Cage." After he and Burns went skydiving, Smithers realized the love he has for his boss was unrequited.
Frustrated, Smithers took it out on his employees, including Simpson, who is voiced by Dan Castellaneta. To get help in their boss' wonderful graces, the employees decided to help find a man for Smithers to date. The three grab to Grindr to ask the town's gay guys for a soiree at Simpson's house.
But when Smithers walked through the door, he saw through his employees' plan. "I notice what's going on here," he told Simpson. "Fix up your boss so he won't be so hard on you."

After many years of hinting, Smithers has finally come out of the closet.
In an episode called The Burns Cage, he enlists the help of Homer to help him uncover a date.
He also uses gay dating app Grindr to search for a suitable match.
The storyline's been welcomed by some fans on Twitter.

Writer Rob LaZebnik claims the episode was inspired by his son, who is also gay.

Nearly every detail of The Simpsons universe has evolved during the show's 26-year sprint. The clunky rabbit-ears TV is now a flat screen. Homer texts with Marge ("Big Blue") on a smartphone. Even the Easter-egg site gags have changed—like when Patton Oswalt's one-off character was seen reading the fictional New York Review of Apps during the brilliant 2012 episode mocking creator Matt Groening's hometown (and show inspiration) of Portland, Oregon. And yet, some elements of Springfield appear stuck in the past.
