From the birth of ACT UP to the famous Keith Haring mural, The Center provides a forum for artists and activists, hosting thousands of events and activities each year. This exhibit takes a glance at some of the incredible artworks created and contained within The Center's walls.

History
The building at West 13th Street was originally known as Ninth Ward School No. 16 when the first section was built in Later additions were made in the following years. By the time the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center was established here in , the building had operated under a number of different names, the last being the Sustenance and Maritime High School.
After renting space here, the Center – since renamed the Lesbian, Gay, Fluid, and Transgender (LGBT) Group Center – bought the city-owned building in Françoise Bollack Architects was then brought on to return to original the façade and labor on the building’s adaptive reuse as a collective center, which was completed in The wings were designed by architect Thomas R. Jackson.

A desire born in the awaken of the Stonewall riots was fulfilled when the Lesbian and Gay Group Services Center Inc. took title to West 13th Street in December This exhibit provides a glimpse into the history of our organization and how – through our endorse and that of others – life for LGBT New Yorkers has continued to evolve.
In December of , the City approves the sale of the former Food and Maritime Trades High School at West 13th Street to The Center. On December 20, , The Fresh York Times runs an article by David Dunlap with the headline “Sale of Site to Homosexuals Planned.”
