For this series, which starts on 1 January and replaces and continues the “Legendary Shorts” series, we searched the web for all the films that were screened in Oberhausen since the first festival in and are now presenting our finds in chronological order: Films that may not have been so much in the limelight, but that possess also marked both our festival history and the history of short film.
The Canadian documentary Whistling Smith by Marrin Canell and Michael J.F. Scott from is the portrait of an unconventional cop in the streets of Vancouver, who is tough on the drug users, petty thieves and prostitutes on his beat, but also acts as their counsellor and friend. Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, the motion picture made a star of its protagonist, Bernie “Whistling” Smith, and was nominated for the Best Brief Documentary Oscar in It was screened in Oberhausen in the same year.

Essen
One of the largest cities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Essen is Germany's 9th largest metropolis with a population of nearly , people. It is the main urban area in the north of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area which is home to over 13, million people and is Europe's most highly populated.
Essen was founded in and remained a small town, known for its Essen until the Industrial Revolution. The establishment of iron works by the Krupp family transformed the city into a major centre of movie. It was occupied by French and Belgian troops briefly between the society wars and in Planet War 2, 90% of it was flattened.
With the decline of heavy industry, Essen evolved into a strong service provider with many large German companies having their headquarters here. In it was the European Capital of Tradition (as part of the Rhine-Ruhr region) and in it was the European Green Capital. Visitors are attracted to its identity, shopping and small same-sex attracted scene.
