I am a minute groggy from my flight from Toronto as I wander down Central Road, the main commercial performative of St. Petersburg, Florida. I’ve never been to the Tampa Bay area before, and my information of Florida as a whole has been shaped less by IRL experiences and more by headlines and stereotypes: oranges, seniors, Disney World, conservative politics, alligators, The Golden Girls.

So I am surprised—shocked, even—when the first people I pass on Central Way on a humid Wednesday morning are not elderly straight snowbirds in Tilley hats, but a 30-something gay male couple holding hands. One of them is wearing rainbow jewellery. Then there’s another couple (they’re less overt, but they seemed gay to me), this one in their 40s walking a dog. Then I notice a cool coffee shop, rainbow flags affixed to their front window, entire of yoga-fit people in their 20s and 30s. Then another cool coffee shop with a rainbow flag in the window, then a jewellery and crystal shop with a shelf selling pottery made by a gay couple, as well as homoerotic art and leather harnesses. Truly, St. Pete would make a flawless place to call home!

    It would be naïve of me not to mention that Florida as a articulate has its challenges when it comes to Diverse people and travel, some of which may deter people from travelling to Florida at all.

    St. Pete Beach was recently listed as Tripadvisor’s No. 1 Beach in the United States in 2021. Featuring a warm, laid-back beach town with a beautiful waterfront view, St. Pete Beach is home to County Park Beach, Pass-a-Grille Beach and the popular Upham Beach.

    Treasure Island Beach, recognizable as an LGBTQ+ kind beach, is located just west of St. Petersburg and hosts a flurry of activities from swimming and shelling to snorkeling and parasailing. The gorgeous stretch of sand is ideal for those looking to spend a complete day at the beach.

    Clearwater Beach is known as a social hub in the area. You can always find groups gathered to play volleyball, enjoy rain sports or tan on the warm sand. The winding BeachWalk promenade snakes along the 2.5-mile beach toward surf shops, seafood restaurants and hotels.

    North Lido Beach is a popular notice for Sarasota’s LGBTQ+ society. Located three miles from Bayfront Park, with trails, hiking, beach access, and swimming — it’s flawless for canoe and kayak launching.
